Don’t Be A Helicopter Parent

dont-be-a-helicopter-parent

5 out of 5 psychologists believe that it is better for parents to be involved with their children than to not be involved.  Actually, I made that statistic up, but I am pretty confident those stats are accurate. There is however, a line that parents should try not to cross in their children’s everyday lives and in their athletic careers. That line separates a parent from being a supportive role model or being known as a “Helicopter Parent”.

Rashan Gary explodes off the line, then uses a meaty forearm to propel the offensive tackle backward and to the right before Gary makes a quick move to the left to knock down the tackling dummy at Nike’s The Opening football camp last month in Oregon.

The move is emblematic of the talent that makes Gary, a defensive tackle for Paramus (N.J.) Catholic, the No. 1 recruit in the 2016 class, according to 247Sports.com’s composite rankings.

Ohio State Tweet on Multi-Sport Recruits Questioned

ohio-state-tweet-on-multi-sport-recruits-questioned

It began with a tweet that went viral – a chart claiming that 42 of the 47 recruits signed by Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer were multi-sport athletes in high school. That started an Internet discussion: If college coaches such as Meyer seem to prefer multi-sport athletes, why do so many high school athletes specialize in one sport?

Ohio Prep Basketball Tournament Attendance Dropping

One thing that never changes at the boys basketball state tournament is the drama.

Yesterday in the Division IV final, New Madison Tri-Village won 48-46 when Colton Linkous made a 12-foot jump shot with 3.3 seconds to go and Harvest Prep’s David Dennis Jr. just missed on a half-court attempt as time expired.

Bill Would Allow Prep Transfers, May Replace FHSAA

bill-would-allow-prep-transfers-may-replace-fhsaa

Proposed legislation working its way through the Florida House of Representatives could eventually lead to high school athletes transferring virtually at will, and it would create a new governing body for high school athletics.

On Thursday, the House Education Committee is scheduled to hear the Extracurricular Activities Bill. Under the proposed bill, students would be eligible to play sports at schools outside their designated zone and school district if enrolled by the start of practice for their sport.

South Elgin junior basketball player Matt Smith, 16, told Aurora police he was assaulted Friday night by as many as four people he identified as possibly being Metea Valley players after the two schools competed in an Upstate Eight Conference game in Aurora.

“Apparently, a 16-year old Elgin male who plays for the (South) Elgin team said he was battered by several males thought to be Metea basketball players at around 9:30 p.m. (Friday) night after the game as he was getting ready to board the team bus,” Aurora police Sgt. Dan Ferrelli said in an email responding to a Daily Herald inquiry about the attack. “Apparently, some of his teammates came to his aid. He went to an Elgin hospital and received three stitches for a cut above his eye. We, along with Metea Valley administrators, will be conducting an investigation.”
